- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- ¾ cup cold water
- 2 cups whole milk
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Mix flour and salt, then rub in cold butter until crumbly. Add water and form dough.
- Roll, fold, and chill dough three times to create layers.
- Roll dough into two sheets and bake at 400°F until golden. Cool completely.
- Heat milk and whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch separately. Combine and cook until thick.
- Stir in butter and vanilla until smooth.
- Layer one pastry sheet, spread custard, then top with second sheet.
- Chill for 2 hours, dust with powdered sugar, and slice into squares
